The baby placed in Boromir’s arms coos.

“This is Faramir,” Finduilas smiles. “Your brother.”

“Brother?” Boromir wrinkles his nose.

Finduilas laughs, bright, like bells. Cards fingers through Boromir’s hair, gentle. “Protect and cherish him. He will be your strength, and you, his.”

Boromir eyes the swaddled bundle, unconvinced.

For one glorious moment, it blinks. Gazes at Boromir with bluest eyes, smile curving its lips. Clutches Boromir’s nose with a tiny hand freed.

Oh. Affection swells in Boromir’s chest; he draws the soft warmth of…Faramir close.

He is mine to protect, Boromir decides. He is mine to cherish.

He is mine.
